In the stillness of the morning, I hear a bird singing.
This birdsong, always unique and always different, most often does not correspond to any fixed, repeatedly recurring rhythm, to any rigid and established structure. In other words, it contains nothing of the familiar idea of rhythm that I have learned. And yet, no one has ever remained unmoved by its song. Nor has anyone been thrown into confusion by its supposed rhythmic indeterminacy.
A sense of attunement. However much I have learned that rhythm is something symmetrical and regularly recurring, beyond the patterns created by human beings, something suggests that in its essence it is a sense of synchronization and, deeper still, the Vibration contained in everything that moves — that is, in everything.
All this is happening in Autumn. Yet the sound reaching my ears speaks of Spring. And for a moment, it is Spring. The body cries out: Spring. I find myself entirely within another state which, although contrary to the external one, is wholly real.
My body can be — and is — the first and principal instrument through which I can feel attunement, Vibration. A human being can live cut off from the body, without sensitivity or subtle perception, unable to recognise, hear, or feel the Vibration.
And yet the Vibration exists.
Perhaps, at some moment, through the drawing force of an Attractor, one begins to feel, to see and to hear — simply and literally, but perhaps also just a fraction beyond — in another, new way that is as old as the Way of Man. To reconnect with the body, this small vessel of clay that is capable of containing everything.
Only then can one begin to Know the World and Rhythm.
